The Bare Truth of Hair Removal
We unpeel the marketing glitz and crazy package deals to unveil the truth about laser and DPL (dynamic pulsed light) hair removal.
In hot and balmy Singapore, it’s no surprises that our wardrobe is filled with sleeveless tops, shorts, and lots of swimwear for lounging by the pool. And that is why we ladies here spend lots of time making sure that we don’t have embarrassing stray strands of hair sticking out. We also want smooth, bare skin that has a healthy glow.
There are options galore when it comes to hair removal. Sometimes, however, with options come confusion. It doesn’t help also when there are so many package deals available, each pushing for multiple applications and lifetime return visits to the salon. To help us with the decision making, Dr. Terence Tan of Halley Medical Aesthetics tells us how dynamic pulsed light (DPL) hair removal stack up against laser hair removal.
Which is better?
That’s usually the first question on our mind but ultimately, they are different; it’s like comparing apples to oranges. What you choose depends on what you need or prefer.
DPL: It is a light-based treatment that is also used during treatment facials for whitening, rejuvenating, smoothening the skin, treating acne, reducing pores, and more. DPL hair removal treatment targets the black pigments within the hair. In doing so, it destroys the hair and surrounding hair follicle. But because the probe (handheld wand of the DPL machine) is bigger, it is a great, cost effective option for treating bigger areas of skin.
Laser: Laser hair removal is very focused in terms of its precision and power delivery. Since it is more precise, it can target the blood vessels within the hair follicle without any damage to the skin. You’d therefore see results faster, and it is great for small areas that you want to target like facial hair.
The “ouch” factor
DPL: You’d feel a slight tingling sensation when the probe touches your skin. That’s all!
Laser: Discomfort is very minimal as the doctor will apply a layer of numbing cream before treatment. You’d feel like a rubber band is snapped against your skin.
How effective is it?
DPL: It removes 80-90% of volume of hair in treated area over time.
Laser: Majority of the hairs are taken care of permanently while regrowth is finer and lighter than previously.
How often should I do the treatment?
DPL: The recommended frequency is once every one to two months.
Laser: Recommended maintenance visit should be once every two months.
Does the colour of my skin and/or hair affect the results?
DPL: Because it targets the black pigments within the hair, it is not recommended for people with dark skin and people with blond hair.
Laser: Laser hair removal using the Long Pulsed Nd:Yag laser works on all hair and skin colors as it targets the follicle rather than the hair itself.
Will it hurt my skin over time?
DPL and laser: No. In fact, the DPL and laser machines used for hair removal are the same machines used for rejuvenation in aesthetic clinics. So both methods are extremely effective with minimal side effect.
Can I go out into the sun after treatment?
DPL and laser: Yes you can! Both treatments only target hair cells without harming the skin cells.
