Cryolipolysis is a new non-invasive technology that uses cold exposure to result in lipolysis, the breakdown of fat by freezing. Clinical studies have demonstrated 20% to 25% reduction in superficial fat layer thickness after each treatment. After a cryolipolysis treatment, the fat layer gradually decreases in thickness over about 3 months. Multiple treatments, as well as overlap of treatment sites, have been performed to optimise fat reduction and body shaping results safely.

This procedure is a great option for reducing subcutaneous fat. It can also be an option for body contouring for patients who are close to their ideal weight and have discrete fat bulges. Side effects of the procedure include erythema of the treated area, bruising and temporary numbness at the site of treatment. There have been no reported cases of damage to the overlying skin and surrounding structures.

Cryolipolysis is a well-tolerated fat-freezing procedure, but patients often ask: Where does the fat go? The fat cells in the treated area are gradually eliminated through the body's normal metabolic processes. The fat is processed similarly to how the fat in food is eliminated and can be used as energy.

Data from animal and human studies suggest that cryolipolysis does not affect serum lipid profiles or liver-related blood tests. No cases of fat embolism as a result of cryolipolysis have been reported. This non-invasive, no downtime procedure has proven to be a safe alternative to liposuction for patients who are close to their ideal weight and have discrete fat bulges.
