How Much Is The "Perfect" Body?

Aesthetics Hub | 6 Sep 2017

CoolSculpting, laser hair removal, scar treatment; how much does it actually cost to get a post-truth "perfect" body?

Waist-trained stomachs, hypnotic bottoms, unnaturally pert breasts and as-if-airbrushed skin; photos of celebrities with a post-truth “perfect” body flood our timelines and dominate every newsfeed. In fact, so ubiquitous have these abnormally contoured celebrities become, that we seldom question how they managed to look that way – or how much it would cost. Vogue speaks to the experts in the cosmetic surgery world to find out just how much the “perfect” body might be.

This non-invasive technology has become hugely popular in celebrity circles for its ability to contour the body without any need for surgery or downtime.

The process uses controlled cooling (Crypolipolysis) to target and kill fat cells. Once the fat cells have been treated, they’re gone for good, meaning the treatment provides long-term results.

“The body has a finite number of fat cells,” explains Dr Michael Prager, cosmetic doctor. “When you eliminate them in one area of the body, but are still consuming the same amount of fat in your diet, it will simply be sent to another area to be stored. Celebrities are CoolSculpting their waists, thighs, arms – but not their buttocks. This means that all the fat they consume can only be stored in the buttocks, which is what gives this hyperbolic, disproportionate look.”

CoolSculpting can cost anything upwards of £400 per treatment per area – with multiple treatments sessions required for best results. And, because the treatment window of the machine is approximately the size of an average hand, multiple applications may be necessary if treating large areas.

“I have patients who come in and they have three treatments on the abdomen, four on the thighs, two on the arms… Before you know it, they’ve spent over £10,000 in one day.”

Breast Augmentation

The Baywatch body may seem archaic now, but breast augmentation is still rife within celebrity culture and advances in implant technology mean that the results can appear more natural.

Another treatment growing in popularity (70 per cent since 2000) is a breast uplift, or mastoplexy, which removes excess skin and tightens the surrounding tissue, and also lipofilling (fat transfer).

“There’s an emerging trend for a composite procedure, which uses lipofilling at the same time as insertion of the implants,” explains Mrs Jacqueline Lewis, cosmetic surgeon. “This reduces the visibility of the edge and surface of the implant, especially in women who have very little soft tissue.”

Smooth Skin

From hair removal to varicose vein treatment, the pursuit of as-if-airbrushed skin can come at a steep price.

First up: laser hair removal, which has become the baseline of red-carpet beauty maintenance. Not to be confused with IPL, laser hair removal uses concentrated beams of light, channelled into pigment in the hair follicles to put them to sleep. Historically, this has meant that the treatment is only available on people whose skin is different enough in colour from their hair, so that the laser knows what to target.

However, new treatments such as the Soprano Ice at the Waterhouse Young Clinic are taking hair removal to new levels, allowing it to be used on all skin tones and types. The Soprano Ice technology provides pain-free hair reduction by gradually heating the dermis to effectively shut down the follicles, but without damaging the surrounding tissue.

But while laser hair removal is ubiquitous on every high-street salon, there are certain treatments that require more specialist hands. For scar removal, Dr Prager recommends the Venus Viva resurfacing treatment, which is able to target textural irregularities like scars, stretch marks and rosacea.

Unlike traditional fractional technology, Venus Viva uses an innovative combination of NanoFractional Radio Frequency (RF) and SmartScan technology to hone in on damaged areas, stimulating the wound-healing response and rebuilding collagen.

As for any thread or varicose veins? Specialist vascular surgeon Dr Michael Gaunt recommends treatments including the Clari Vein (a minimally invasive technique that uses a tiny rotating wire and a solution that causes the vein to break down) and VNUS Closure Technique (a special catheter inserted under local anaesthetic that uses radiofrequency to heat the vein wall, causing it to close).

A course of four Venus Viva treatments, from £800
ClariVein treatment for one leg, £2,500
Six sessions of top-to-toe Soprano Ice laser hair removal, from £4,400
