How to Prepare Yourself Before Getting a Botox Procedure

Aesthetics Hub | 24 Aug 2020

Botox has been popular for many years. It is a great way to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. Even though the results of a Botox procedure are not permanent, they can last a few months. It is a minimally invasive procedure which makes it an excellent alternative to surgery.

Botox Preparation

Even though getting Botox injections does not require as much effort in preparation as plastic surgery, it requires some effort. The following tips may help you prepare for a Botox procedure.

1. Understand When to Say No

It is vital to know when Botox is not the right option for you. During the preparation process, find out if you:

  • Are allergic to Botox injections
  • Have trouble swallowing or breathing
  • Have infections at the sites of injections
  • Have a nerve or muscle disorder

It is not a good option if you are breast-feeding or pregnant. If you are unsure of your eligibility for Botox, get help from your esthetician.

2. Do Your Research

Get as much information about Botox as you can. Having enough information will put you at ease on the day of the procedure. Some of the most important things to find out include the drug used in Botox procedures, the potential risks, and its benefits. Some benefits of Botox include:

  • Smoothing out wrinkles
  • Managing an overactive bladder
  • Giving you a youthful and vibrant skin
  • Managing extreme underarm sweating
  • Preventing migraines

3. Avoid Certain Medications

Before the procedure, your doctor may suggest that you stop taking certain medications and supplements. Muscle relaxants, blood thinners, and NSAIDs can cause excessive bleeding when used along with Botox. Stop taking those drugs a week or two before the date of treatment. If you have to take certain medication up to the day before your treatment, let your doctor know about it. Common drugs that you may need to avoid include:

  • Allergy medications
  • Aspirin
  • Warfarin
  • Sleeping aids
  • Ibuprofen
  • Vitamin E
  • Omega 3 oils

4. Stop Smoking and Drinking

Cigarettes and alcohol can slow down the healing process after Botox. Smoking increases your risk of bruising. Do not drink or smoke for at least 48 hours before the procedure.

5. Ice the Treatment Area

Applying an ice pack on the area you wish to treat can minimize bruising from your Botox injection. Place the ice pack in a towel and apply it on your skin for at least 20 minutes. The best time to ice the treatment area is on the day before treatment. If you cannot access a professional ice pack, consider making it using a bag of frozen vegetables or fruits.

6. Cleanse Your Skin Before Treatment

Before getting Botox treatment, ensure that your skin is free of dirt, makeup, or moisturizers. Use a mild cleanser and some water. When you are sure that your skin is clean, pat it dry with a dry towel. Before administering the injection, the doctor may clean your skin with some antiseptic and rubbing alcohol.

7. Calm Your Nerves

Even though Botox is a simple procedure, it is reasonable to be nervous before your appointment. Schedule your appointment at a time and date that is convenient for you. You should not have to worry about the timing. It is likely to be stressful if you feel rushed. You can relieve your anxiety by trying the following techniques:

  • Listening to calming music
  • Aromatherapy
  • Practising breathing exercises
  • Taking a sedative if the doctor prescribes it
  • Having a loved one accompany you to the appointment
  • Asking your doctor questions to distract yourself

8. Be Transparent During the Consultation

During your initial consultation, be honest about your medical history and medication. Natural supplements count as well. If you have prior skin conditions, allergies, illnesses, or health conditions, disclose them during your consultation.

It is also important to let your doctor know if you are a smoker or suffer from any respiratory issues. Speak about the skincare products you use as they may affect the results of your Botox treatment.

9. Set Realistic Expectations

Before getting your Botox treatment, ensure that you have realistic expectations. You should identify your problem areas after looking in the mirror, and you should understand what Botox can do for you. You should realize that the results of Botox are not permanent and that you may need several treatments to achieve your desired results.

10. Use Arnica Cream

If your skin is prone to bruising, consider applying some arnica cream. It will reduce your likelihood of bruising at the site of injection. If you have questions about how to use the cream, talk to your doctor about it.

If you plan on getting Botox, proper preparation is essential for good results. Start preparing for your appointment at least a week early. With Botox, you can enjoy fewer lines and wrinkles, vibrant skin, and a youthful appearance.
